Baignade de bonne heure, c’est de plus en plus agréable, puis nous allons essayer une autre randonnée, plus courte et qui part de la plage. Nous trouvons un beau chemin que nous prenons, on ne voit pas de marques mais le chemin est si beau, c’est sûrement là. Erreur. Ce beau chemin arrive à une petite maison et s’arrête là. On redescend sur la plage, continuons un peu et trouvons le début du chemin, bien indiqué. On monte, arrivons sur une route qu’il faut suivre sur une centaine de mètres puis tournons à droite sur un nouveau chemin. Nous arrivons à une tour en ruine et voilà. Randonnée courte, 5 km, mais pas si belle que la grande de Vathi à Apollonia hier. Nous redescendons, nous baignons et déjeunons sous le bimini, cette toile bleue qui fait de l’ombre. Jens achète des palmes et va voir l’ancre. Un voilier allemand est près de nous et sa chaine d’ancre croise la nôtre. Lui aussi nage et le voit, pas de problème mais il faudra qu’il parte avant nous demain, nous pensons aller voir une baie pour préparer un « båttur » avec nos visiteurs puis revenir ici. Encore un diner-test, les entrées, à cette taverna, sont vraiment bonnes …

Early bathing it’s becoming more and more pleasant, then we'll try another hike, shorter and starting from the beach. We find a beautiful path, we take it, we don’t see the marks but the path is so beautiful, it's surely here. Error. This beautiful path reaches a small house and ends there. We go down to the beach again, keep walking a little and find the beginning of the path, well marked. We climb, arrive on a road that must be followed for a hundred meters and then turn right on a new path. We arrive at a ruined tower and that’s it. Short hike, 5 km, but not so beautiful as the one Vathi-Apollonia yesterday. We come back, go swimming and have lunch under the bimini, this blue canvas that makes shadow on the cockpit. Jens buys fins and swims to see the anchor. A German yacht is near us and his anchor chain crosses ours. The German guy swims and sees it, no problem for now, but it will be better if he leaves before us tomorrow, we are going to see a bay to prepare a "båttur" with our visitors, then come back here. Another diner-test, the appetizers in this taverna are really good ...

Nous nous levons à 7 h 15, baignade à 7 h 30, petit-déjeuner puis nous partons à pied en randonnée vers Apollonia, la capitale, presque de l’autre côté de l’ile. Randonné de 9 km, temps prévu 3 h 50. Cela monte bien au début mais on est récompensé par la belle vue, le sentier est bien marqué et est un vieux chemin entre les anciens villages. De nombreuses terrasses et murs témoignent du travail des anciens. Une ferme est toujours en activité, accessible seulement à pied. Par erreur, nous passons très près de cette ferme et un jeune homme vient nous voir. Il ne parle pas anglais, mais comprend qu’on veut aller à Apollonia et nous montre le chemin du bras. Il se met ensuite la main sur la poitrine et dit : « Pakistan » ! Il dit aussi le nom du restaurant à Vathi où nous avons diné hier, c’est la ferme qui produit la viande pour le restaurant. Nous passons près d’un monastère où l’église est ouverte et où j’écris un petit mot dans le livre de visiteurs. Nous continuons, le paysage est varié, le chemin en bon état et reconstitué après un arrêt ravitaillement, nous arrivons à Apollonia. Là, il souffle un fort vent et, pensant à Maja seule à son quai (les voisins sont partis) et tirant sur son ancre, nous prenons un taxi pour rentrer rapidement. Mais ici, à Vathi, c’est calme et Maja n’a pas bougé. La randonnée est très faisable et nous la conseillerons à nos visiteurs. Après un grand verre de jus, baignade longue et agréable, 

22 ⁰ et eau claire. Lunch et après-midi tranquille. Troisième baignade vers 17 h, l’eau est maintenant à 23 ⁰. Diner-test, et le plan commence à se dessiner pour le repas de fête. A suivre.

We get up at 7:15 am, swimming at 7:30 am, breakfast then we leave to hike to Apollonia, the capital, almost on the other side of the island, distance 9 km, estimated time 3 hours and 50 minutes. It’s quite steep at the beginning but we are rewarded by the beautiful view, the trail is well marked and is an old path between the old villages. Many terraces and walls reflect the work of the elders. A farm is still active, accessible only on foot. By mistake, we pass very close to this farm and a young man comes to see us. He does not speak English, but understands that we wants to go to Apollonia and show us the way, pointing with his arm. Then he puts his hand on his chest and says: "Pakistan"! He also says the name of the restaurant in Vathi where we had dinner yesterday, it’s the farm that produces the meat for the restaurant. We pass near a monastery where the church is open and I write a note in the visitors book. We continue, the landscape is varied, the path in good condition and, reconstituted after a  stop with drink and a little food, we arrive in Apollonia. There a strong wind is blowing, we think of  Maja alone at the quai (the neighbors left) and dragging on her anchor, so we take a taxi to come back quickly. But here in Vathi, it's quiet and Maja has not moved. The hike is very doable and we’ll recommand it to our visitors. After a glass of juice, long and nice swim, the water is 22 ⁰. Lunch and quiet afternoon. Third swim at about 5 pm, the water is now at 23 ⁰. Diner-test again, and the plan begins to take shape for the party meal. To be continued.

Calme, bien dormi. Nous allons nous baigner à la plage à 8 h et entendons les cloches de l’église sonner, elles sonnent allègrement, pas du tout graves et solemnelles. Le ferry rapide arrive du Pirée un peu après 9 h, il manœuvre calmement et ne fait pas de vagues. Beaucoup de monde en descend, il reste peu de temps et repart. Jens va chercher de l’eau et paye 5 euros au chef de port, qui est, en fait, le sous-chef du port et celui-ci les donne au chef. Nous partons à 11 h 05, pas de vent, mer plate et c’est un peu brumeux. Nous mettons une heure pour aller à la baie de Vathi où nous étions venus en septembre avec Knut et Margrethe. Un voilier italien arrive juste avant nous et se met, lui aussi, au quai de l’église, mais il y a de la place et, surprise, les « Italiens » parlent français. C’est un groupe d’amis français qui a loué un voilier à un propriétaire italien. Vathi est bien comme on s’en souvenait, jolie baie, calme hameau et plage sûre. Nous allons rester à Vathi deux semaines parce que nous attendons la venue de la famille et d’amis pour fêter les soixante-dix ans (un peu à l’avance) de Jens. Notre « travail » est de tester les restaurants (ça c’est dur !), essayer les randonnées et voir que les diverses locations sont prêtes.Les premiers invités arriveront vendredi prochain, puis un grand groupe le samedi. Nous sommes très, très heureux de revoir enfants et petits-enfants bientôt. Baignade du bateau, très agréable, puis lunch. Un grand « gin palace » se met entre les « Italiens » et nous, trois membres d’équipage (professionnels) font le travail et quatre ou cinq personnes regardent. C’est un charter et nous parlons un peu avec un des matelots, il est du Bangladesh, travaille 6 mois en Grèce et passe 6 mois chez lui, mais sa famille lui manque et il en a un peu assez de cette vie. Blog, promenade pour aller voir l’ouverture de la baie et « test » à une taverna. La soirée est calme, étoilée et douce.

Quiet night, we slept well. We go for a swim at the beach at 8 am and hear the church bells ringing, they sound joyful, not at all serious and solemn. The speed ferry arrives from Pyraeus a little after 9 am, he maneuvers calmly and doesn’t make waves. Many people go ashore, it stays a short time and leaves. Jens gets water and pay 5 euros to the harbor master, who, in fact, is the second harbor master and he gives them to his chef. We leave at 11:05 am, no wind, flat seas and it is a little hazy. It takes us one hour to go to the Bay of Vathi where we came in September with Knut and Margrethe. An Italian yacht arrives just before us and goes, too, at the dock of the church, but there is room and, surprise, the "Italians" speak French. It is a French group of friends who rented a boat from an Italian owner. Vathi is as we remembered it, beautiful bay, quiet hamlet and safe beach. We will stay in Vathi two weeks because we await the arrival of family and friends to celebrate Jens’ seventieth birthday (a little in advance). Our "job" is to test the restaurants (that's hard!), try the hiking trails and see that the rented studios and apartments are ready. The first guests arrive next Friday, and then a large group on Saturday. We are very, very happy to see our children and grandchildren soon. Swimming form Maja, very nice and lunch. A big "gin palace" goes between the "Italians" and us, three crew members (professionals) do the work and four or five people are watching. It’s a charter and we talk a bit with one of the sailors. He is from Bangladesh, is working 6 months in Greece and spends six months at home, but he misses his family and he is a little tired of this life. Blog, walk to see the opening of the bay and "test" in a taverna. The evening is calm, starry and mild.

Baignade à 8 h, petit-déjeuner puis douche pour moi. C’est le chef du port qui a les clés des douches, et il est tout embêté car il trouve que 4 euros pour une douche c’est cher. Il me dit que Jens peut se doucher et ne paiera rien, mais Jens ne veut pas, alors il me dit qu’il nous gardera une douche gratuite pour la prochaine fois. Et chaque fois que quelqu’un prend une douche, il fait un reçu que l’on doit signer. Nous partons à 10 h, petit vent, agréable, mais dans le chenal entre l’ile de Gaïdharos et Ermoupolis, il y a des vagues courtes et sèches. Mais c’était bien pire en septembre 2015, quand on était venu de Gaïdharos, on avait mis 40 minutes contre vent (force 6) et vagues pour faire 1,5 mile. Le reste de la traversée est calme. Nous arrivons à Kamares, le port de ferry de Sifnos à 17 h. Un ferry rapide arrive un peu avant nous et, en repartant fait un détour pour ne pas nous faire trop de vagues, sympa. Dans le port de Kamares, il faut aussi se mettre avec ancre derrière et nez sur la quai, un homme nous montre où nous mettre. Il est assez autoritaire avec seulement quelques mots d’anglais, surtout good et no good. On va se baigner à la jolie plage, allons à une agence de voyage qui vend tous les renseignements sur l’ile rassemblés en un « paquet » : plan, carte, chemins de randonnée, horaire des bus, numéros de tlf des taxis ... C’est bien organisé, le village est pimpant et la plage jolie et en plus, Sifnos dit non aux sacs en plastique. Jens achète du miel et du vin à un commerçant qui vendrait de la neige à un Esquimau. Nous dinons au bateau et le chef de port s’invite, il monte sur Maja et vient s’assoir avec nous, nous l’invitons à partager notre diner mais il refuse, il accepte seulement un verre de vin et un morceau de (bon) pain d’Ermoupolis. Après diner, nous allons sur la jetée voir un super-yacht qui arrive et ensuite un autre, encore plus grand arrive et se met au quai du ferry, donc il faudra qu’il parte demain matin avant l’arrivée du ferry à 9 h.

Swimming at 8 am, breakfast and shower for me. This is the harbor master who has the keys for the showers, and he is sorry because he finds that 4 euros for a shower is expensive. He tells me that Jens can take a free shower but Jens doesn’t want to, then he says he’ll keep a free shower for us next time we come to Ermoupolis. And every time someone takes a shower, he gives a recept that we must sign. We leave at 10 am, light wind, nice, but in the channel between the island of Gaidharos and Ermoupolis there are short waves. But it was much worse in September 2015, when we came from Gaidharos, we used 40 minutes against wind (force 6) and waves for 1.5 mile. The rest of the passage is quiet. We reach Kamares, the ferry port of Sifnos at 5 pm. A fast ferry arrives a little before us, and when leaving makes a detour so as not to make too many waves for us, nice. In the port of Kamares, we have to have an achor back and the nose on the dock, a man shows us where to go. He is quite bossy with only a few words of English, especially good and no good. We swim at the lovely beach, go to a travel agency that sells everything about the island gathered in a "package": plan, map, hiking trails, bus timetable, tlf numbers of taxis .. . it is well organized, the village is pretty and the beach beautiful and even better, Sifnos says no to plastic bags. Jens buys honey and wine to a seller who would sell snow to an Eskimo. We dine on Maja and the harbor master comes and visit us, he just comes on board and sits with us, we invite him to share our dinner but he refuses, he only accepts a glass of wine and a piece of (good ) bread from Ermoupolis. After dinner, we go on the jetty to see a super-yacht arriving and then another one, even bigger which go to the ferry dock, so he will have to leave tomorrow morning before the arrival of the ferry at 9 am.
